We all know that the lava monster is a crackerjack news anchor on station WECW, but if you’re not an early bird, you may not realize that it’s also the co-host of the morning show on the same station. Along with co-host Diane, the lava monster welcomes local guests, gives lighthearted hot-takes on the news of the day, and introduces recurring segments like the “A.M. 6 Movie Minute” with a Gene Shalit type.

Connections:

Most obviously, this is the second appearance of the titular subject from WECW Channel 6 News at 9 With Your Anchorperson the Lava Monster. The monster was so much fun to paint that I had to paint it again!

The lava monster’s co-host, Diane, is dressed exactly like Daphne Blake from Scooby-Doo, which is the second direct reference to that cartoon after Spooky Space Kook Visits the Sears Portrait Studio.

Behind the stage is a model city forming part of the Lava Monster in the Morning studio set; that model city is a reproduction of the cityscape from Fight Meat Dance Battle Go!

Like the earlier WECW painting, this one presents the canvas as if it were a television screen. Framed in the bottom of the screen is a small table with some photos, and a little yellow vase. It’s the same vase that’s being knocked over by the tentacle fight in Tendril is the Night!
